The Women’s Empowerment Network’s workforce readiness program launched a new cycle of its Career Speaker Series on Tuesday, September 18th! Guest speaker Jamie Horst, Community Engagement Manager of The Alcoa Foundation, led a seminar on goal-setting techniques for students enrolled in the program. Students learned the importance of setting SMART goals, i.e. goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely. They also reflected on short-term and long-term professional objectives; learned the importance of creating a network of advisors; and practiced drafting actionable steps to reach goals.
Students left the workshop with renewed confidence in applying goal-setting techniques. One student said, “I thought the goal-setting lecture was good. It made me think about my short time goals and if I can achieve them, and what it is that I really want to accomplish in the long term. I’m trying to take one day at a time, so this exercise made me think.” Another student, Theresa, began to understand the value of networking. She shared, “Ms. Horst shared three goal tools that I found very helpful, specifically the ‘Individual Development Plan.’ Thinking of asking ‘who’ can help me achieve my goal had never occurred to me.”
Jamie reported an equally gratifying experience: “It was so inspiring to spend time with the Women’s Empowerment Network! The energy in the room was palpable… I know there is nothing these women can’t do when they are committed. I look forward to hearing of their success upon completion of the program!”
Many thanks to Jamie for lending her time and expertise to support the professional development of women in New York City!
