YWCA of the City of New York is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. The girls initiatives is looking for some volunteers to run our new Maker Lab space opening this Fall. Volunteers will be responsible for orienting new members to the space, guiding youth with projects, building relationships with youth, keeping the space stocked and organized, building youth’s inquiry skills, working with youth to build resiliency strategies to counter negative stereotypes and foster confidence in STEM fields and having fun! Volunteers will collaborate with the Senior Director of Girls Initiatives. Key attributes of a successful volunteer are experience working with youth, experience with Maker Spaces, desire to experiment, creativity to engage in projects with young people, and flexibility to work with youth and engage youth in projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the YW’s Maker Space
  • Assess and document student skill level and progress
  • Develop strong, positive relationships with students to promote personal and academic growth
  • Document and review student learning progress to share with staff
  • Champion YWCA anti-racist and anti-sexist philosophy
  • Fulfill all other duties deemed vital to the function of the Maker Space

Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program
  • Some experience working with youth
  • Excitement to manage Maker Space
  • Highly self-motivated and creative
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • STEM and technical knowledge (engineering, app development, coding, design)
  • Ability to take initiative and work collaboratively
  • Ability and willingness to commit to at least one semester and program philosophy
  • Strong work ethic and professional values
  • Commitment to promoting YWCA’s mission

Volunteer position from September 2015 – December 2015. Additional opportunity to volunteer January 2016 – June 2016
