Speaking up: Let’s Talk about Real Issues Featured Image

Throughout March, the YW has hosted Women’s History Month panels focusing on Women, Media and Influence. We’ve had some incredibly inspiring discussions with truly amazing women on (the lack of) gender and race equality in the media- conversations that have been long overdue. Our panelists dove right in to discuss some of the issues that they’ve faced as they’ve worked to change the face of the media to better reflect the real lives of women in today’s world.

What kinds of issues? Stereotypes. Identity. False perceptions. A failure to speak up and be heard. Failure to listen. No stone was left unturned by the panels as they told their stories and tackled tough questions about the issues they face on a daily basis. Panelists and audience members alike took to Twitter to share some of the struggles women are facing in the media:

Panelist Tish James summed up the pig picture pretty succinctly:

So, where do we go from here?

We engage men on the conversation because true equality cannot become reality without their support.

We take time to pause and listen, to recognize that each voice is important and to better know what is still standing in our way.

We continue to work for a better future together, by joining these conversations, supporting each other, and refusing to back down from our mission of equality. Most importantly, as our panelist Eva McKend put it:

The conversation continues at the YW and on Twitter. Check out all of the amazing, inspiring things that happened at our panels @YWCANYC and #YWwomen.

Then, join the discussion. We can’t wait to hear from you.
