The YWCA of the City of New York (YW-NYC) is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. We are a multiracial women’s social justice organization dedicated to addressing issues that emerge at the intersection of race, class and gender. Founded in 1858, the YW-NYC is the first YW in the United States and part of an international movement of YWs worldwide.  We currently serve 1,500 New York City school children by providing leadership, STEAAM and advocacy training for young women citywide through our high school Girls Initiatives, and Out-of-School Time (OST) programs for elementary and middle school students in culturally diverse communities in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

The Senior Director of Operations will be joining the organization at an exciting time during which we are looking to expand and grow under a new Chief Executive Officer. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Senior Director of Operations supports the CEO in managing the day-to-day operations of the YWCA of the City of New York. This is a great opportunity to grow with the organization as we continue to scale. The ideal candidate will be someone with 10+ years of program and administrative experience in the human services sector. She/He/They should possess strong leadership and management skills and be accustomed to using data to make decisions and to linking program operations to improved outcomes. Fund development experience is a plus.

The Senior Director of Operations will bring a new level of creativity and innovation to the YW-NYC. The perfect candidate will help to solidify the organizational structure and establish a seamless process of collaboration between programs, administration, finance, development and communications. She/He/They should be detail-oriented, a collaborative team player and passionate about the YW-NYC’s mission of eliminating racism and empowering women.



  • In collaboration with the CEO, senior program directors and outsourced financial management team establish annual agency budget and monitor monthly progress against budget targets
  • Work in close partnership with financial management team to monitor all fiscal activities related to programs and operations ensuring compliance with internal controls and government funding requirements
  • Participate in monthly board finance and investment committee meetings and weekly finance meetings with CEO and financial management team
  • Ensure timely reporting to government agencies to retain nonprofit status and high ranking


  • In coordination with Human Resources Manager implement human resources calendar and procedures including benefits negotiations, recruitment and onboarding of staff, annual review processes, updating of employee manual and professional development program
  • Oversee vendor relationships from suppliers to insurance contracts
  • Monitor all subcontractor agreements and registration of government contracts
  • Oversee operations and leases at YW-NYC HQ in Lower Manhattan and Family Resource Center in midtown Manhattan, including compliance with Covid-19 requirements
  • Ensure compliance of government contracts and facilities requirements related to public school programs
  • Act as primary liaison to outsourced IT consultant ensuring equipment, software systems and training meet needs of staff across the organization


  • Participate as member of management team to develop strategy and vision for the YW-NYC
  • Collaborate with CEO, Senior Program Directors and Development Manager on the creation of integrated programs, curricula and initiatives to advance the mission of the YW-NYC
  • Develop strategic alliances with sister YWs in New York, and other like-minded organizations, to create partnerships that maximize the impact of YW-NYC programs
  • Advise and support Senior Program Directors in expanding reach of youth development programs and assist in program participant recruitment strategies citywide and in local neighborhoods
  • Research and implement evaluation tools to demonstrate and quantify impact of YW-NYC programs and initiatives

Development and Communications

  • Work in close partnership with the Development Manager to ensure that programs have the financial and internal resources needed; help identify and cultivate funding sources, secure new streams of income and provide up-to-date program data to the CEO, board and development team
  • Collaborate with the CEO, Development Manager and Director of Communications to develop and implement a cohesive and integrated development and communications strategy that reaches various stakeholders including donors, program participants, government and community partners
  • Work with development team to ensure budget milestones are met and/or exceeded with proper recording of restricted funding and timely collection of pledges, donations and matching funds
  • Contribute to event planning, including annual Salute luncheon or remote equivalent, and advise on how best to showcase YW-NYC’s strengths, staff and impact

Project Management

  • Oversee implementation of project management software to optimize organizational productivity and team coordination
  • Oversee the measurement and effectiveness of agency processes, both internal and external
  • Provide timely, accurate and complete reports on the operating condition of the YW-NYC
  • Foster a success-oriented, accountable environment within the agency and across programs
  • Represent the organization at events, conferences and forums
  • Lead, manage, and oversee special and/or ad hoc projects as needed
  • Fulfill all other duties deemed vital to the function of the organization by the CEO

Knowledge, skills and abilities required

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Innovative and creative program design skills
  • Well-versed in financial systems and project management software; adept at data collection and analysis
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently handle multiple, simultaneous, and complex tasks and projects
  • Ability to work with a high level of confidentiality
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, employees and various partners, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work with a wide range of constituencies
  • Ability to develop and foster diverse and highly productive teams
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Sense of humor


  • Master’s degree in nonprofit management, public administration, education, social work or a related human services field
  • Minimum 10-years of experience with progressive responsibility in dynamic nonprofit organization(s)
  • Previous experience in successful project management is a must
  • Experienced as an educator, facilitator or trainer
  • Familiar with addressing issues that emerge at the intersection of race, class and gender Previous experience with program evaluation and development of key metrics
  • Flexible and adaptable; able to perform under pressure
  • Strong work ethic
  • Facilities and IT management a plus
  • Human Resources management experience a plus
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, videoconferencing, project management systems and database software programs

Position is Full-Time, Exempt.
