Students of the YW’s After School program at P.S. 90 harvested the bounty of their efforts, and generous helpings of fresh vegetables from the student-run garden, during an end of the school year “Garden Party.” Putting their education on nutrition to work, students used their freshly harvested vegetables to create a strawberry vinaigrette salad complete with sunflower seeds, fresh strawberries, and raisins.

The event was the culmination of the YW’s yearlong “Painting Coney Island Green” initiative, sponsored by HSBC North America. Students learned the benefits of healthy eating, reducing waste, and environmental sustainability through a series of interactive lessons, fieldtrips, teamwork, and partnerships with organizations such as Edible Schoolyard NYC, GreenThumb, GrowNYC and ConEdison.
