What is the mission of the YWCA of the City of New York?
The mission of the YWCA of the City of New York is to address the critical needs of New York City women and to empower them for success and leadership in their lives, jobs and communities. We focus on underserved families through job training, educational child care and after school programs; partnerships with business, government and other not-for-profits; and advocacy on behalf of the clients we serve.
How does the organization operate?
The YW is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Board of Directors, under the leadership of the Board Chair, oversees the governance of the organization. The Chief Executive Officer and the senior management team execute the Board’s plans and policies and manage all aspects of program and operations.
How many people does the organization serve on a yearly basis?
The YW serves approximately 5,000 women and their families a year.
Is the YWCA-NYC part of a larger YWCA movement?
Yes, the YWCA is the oldest women’s organization in the world, serving 25 million women in 122 countries.
How is the organization funded?
The YW is funded through government contracts and grants, corporations, foundations, individuals and investment income.
How does the organization measure success?
The YW is committed to program excellence, relying heavily on the feedback of program partners, clients and frontline staff to assess the efficacy of our efforts and the needs of the families we serve. In addition, we have invested resources in third-party evaluators such as the New York State One-Stop Operating Systems and Fordham University National Center for Schools and Communities, and partnered with The After School Corporation to measure program improvement, demonstrate the results of pilot programs, and plan for the long-term.
How can I make a contribution to the YWCA‑NYC?
The YW is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. All contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by the law. The YW accepts individual gifts, corporate and foundation gifts, stock gifts, legacies and bequests, matching gifts, United Way designations and in-kind contributions, such as printing, professional services or property.
